Preventive Medicine provides comprehensive public health support to counter environmental, occupational disease threats to the health and readiness of Army Units and installation personnel.

Army Public Health Nursing responsibilities include Child Youth and School Services health consultation, health promotion, health education, communicable disease intervention and disease prevention.

Health Promotion and Education

Programs include pregnancy postpartum physical training, wellness education classes, sexually transmitted infection, hot and cold weather training and more.  For Tobacco Cessation, see your Primary Care Manager (PCM) or contact Health Management Clinic at 757-314-7612.

Active Duty In-processing:  Class starts at 0745 Mon and Wed, in Bldg. 2792.  You must sign in at 0730 and have already been registered for the class.

NOTE: Bring medical records if available (MEDPROS review and update completed during in-processing)br

HIV Testing (Active Duty only): 0745-0845 every Tue and Thu
NOTE: HIV results may be obtained in 5-7 days by presenting to Public Health Nursing 1000-1630.

Group Self Care Classes:  Contact 757-314-8037 to schedule.

Adult Self Care Classes: Active Duty and TRICARE Prime/TRICARE Plus beneficiaris, 10:30 a.m. Mon only in Bldg. 2792.

Pediatric Self Care Classes: 11:00 a.m. Mon (NO children allowed in class)

Pregnant and Postpartum Physical Training (PPPT) Program (Active Duty):

  • Education Classes: 0730-0830 Fri. Enrollment
  • Enrollment on a walk-in basis. See program NCOIC at McClellan Fitness Center 0630-0730 Mon-Thu

Environmental Health

Conducts environmental surveillance (includes drinking water, food service facilities, radiological monitoring, seasonal heat stress index, mosquito surveillance and more)

Responsible for hearing testing, occupational and pre-employment physicals, ergonomic assessments, and occupational medical screenings (i.e. vision, pulmonary function testing and vaccines).

Conducts surveys of workplace operations to determine employees’ (both military and civilian) potential exposures to chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomics hazards.  Performs assistance surveys such as ventilation, indoor air quality (IAQ), noise and building plans review.  Information that is gathered during these evaluations, including worker exposure monitoring results, is entered into the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS) longitudinal exposure database.

Directions to Preventive Medicine

  1. From main gate (Washington Blvd.) proceed straight
  2. Go through Hines Circle and continue on Washington Blvd. Go straight through the Traffic light at Jackson Ave.
  3. Approximately 1 mile past the traffic light, the road will split; stay left.
  4. Turn left at stop sign.
  5. Approximately ½ mile turn left (2nd left) onto Harrison Loop.
  6. Bldg. 2792 is on the right side of the parking lots.
